FPI in Cambodia: Our Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station Is Making a Hit
Pub Date:2022-08-18 Source: View Num:6453

According to Aqicn, Cambodia ranks 162nd (out of 178 countries) on the Environmental Performance Index for Air Quality. As a leading tourism nation, Cambodia has gained a great economic surge but also witnessed a deteriorating environment. The issue shares mixed reasons. On the one hand is the chain effect caused by gushes of tourists and the outdated local transportation, which keep emitting exhaust containing CO, hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide, SO2, and PM; on the other, the lingering issues of industrial emissions and extensive incineration. All of which have wreaked havoc on the country.

Fortunately, with a wish to build a more promising human community with a shared future, China is willing to offer supports to Cambodia. After that, FPI, as the winder of the bid, shoulders the responsibility to provide advanced ambient air quality monitoring stations, which help to assuage the deterioration of air quality.

Background information

On the dark side is the complicated environmental issues caused by multiple sides. But on the bright side, Cambodia has forged a strong relationship with China. As a strategic fulcrum for China to construct the strategy of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) International Green Development Coalition, Cambodia has been the main receiver of friendly helps from China's government. It is no exception this time.

Program Difficulties

After a comprehensive dialogue with the local ecological and environmental protection department, we concluded that the program has the following difficulties:

1. System construction and integration issues

The system entails a capable devices manufacturer who can provide comprehensive and professional services and guidance, considering various devices concluded. These should all be adjusted to the same data communication protocol and debugged coordinately. In conclusion, the program dictates a scientific plan, quick response, and strong coordination.

2. Routine maintenance and other technical services issues

The Cambodian side took charge of the maintenance jobs, and the FPI the routine inspection and stand-by coaching. However, they are strangers to the continuous air quality monitoring station, having no device operation experience, meaning that part of our mission is to provide workers with long-term technical training.

3. Other Issues

Languages, communication, data security, customization, cultural differences, and the pandemic could also put a dent in the process.

Project Proposals

After careful consideration of this project, we made a basic blueprint for it.

1. Overall objective

We decide to build 10 ambient air quality monitoring stations in 9 cities to monitor air pollutants like NOX, PM10, PM2.5, SO2, O3, and CO, and five major meteorological parameters. The operation, data transmission, and maintenance processes should be processed automatically while ensuring data security. Besides, the project is a part of the long-range plan; therefore, the system should be extensible, allowing other monitoring devices, mobile or portable, to come in.

2. Equipment and software platform provided

FPI provided AQMS series equipment for SO2, NOX, CO, and Ozone monitoring and for data calibration, BPM-200 for particulate matter detection, and customized calibration devices like the flowmeter and temperature and humidity atmospheric manometer for laboratory analyzers.

Accompanying the various devices is the software platform, which is another access for the Cambodian side to a more integrated and effective monitor. The platform can present data like real-time monitoring results, dynamic reviews of monitoring, and monitoring site ranking. It can tally the data of the 10 stations to see the trend with naked eyes and can help to manage the stations and users. All the information can be displayed in both English and Chinese.

And the app can showcase the distribution of pollutants on a map, which can present the data in a more lively way, making an easier comparison between different stations. On top of that, if there is abnormal information, the app can send out alerts in a timely manner.

Coping Methods

As a professional, intelligent overall solution provider, we believe there are enormous differences between projects. Our competitiveness is that we can adapt to unique situations for better results. And here are our responses to the program difficulties:

1. Coping with system construction and integration

We constantly learn from previous projects and can predict some possible situations and prepare well for them. Besides, we have developed our technical support teams at home and abroad, who can come to the spot for coaching equipment testing, information transmission, and other jobs.

2. Coping with the maintenance issue

The advanced air pollution monitoring stations can ensure an efficient operation and provide a series of services automatically, like problem diagnosis, seeking help and activating counter-control remotely, decreasing maintenance while ensuring accurate data. In addition, FPI will teach the local workers basic theory, helping them to master the skills of operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting through in-person instruction and testing.

3. Coping with other issues

Face-to-face communications, local professional teams, and deep-down inspection of the local environment are our accesses to cope with those problems. All in all, both sides want the outcome to reach the acme of perfection, which is why FPI spares no effort to overcome all obstacles.

Satisfactory Results

1. For Cambodia

The 10 ambient air quality monitoring stations cover half of the provinces in Cambodia. Therefore, the Cambodian side can scan the air quality data through a single app or the data center, helping them to formulate feasible environmental plans. Besides, our training and coaching services can help them to foster ambient quality monitoring talents, which is beneficial in the long run.

2. For China

The Cambodian case epitomizes that promoting BRI is not empty talk. China does make substantial efforts on that. Therefore, a positive international image, friendly and responsible, is reinforced. Besides, it is a big step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which is for the good of mankind since environmental issues are borderless.

3. For FPI

The program serves as a showcase for FPI's great competitiveness in this field. In addition, it is another milestone to witness our improvement.

Conclusion

The Deputy Director of the Environmental Protection Industry Association Of Cambodia approved that "China and Cambodia are working together to promote BRI, which can benefit the Cambodian people. It is beyond any doubt that the operation of the monitoring program will generate a great effect."

We are satisfied that our ambient air quality monitoring station can be seen and acclaimed by a growing number of people. But this will not be an end. Wait and see where FPI will arrive.
